Meet Our Artisans in Jaipur: The Hand-Printing Process Behind Mooch
When I founded Mooch in 2023, I was inspired by my grandmother's love of beautiful, handcrafted textiles and a deep commitment to slow living. That inspiration led me to Jaipur, India, where I discovered a community of master artisans whose hand-printing techniques have been passed down through generations.
Designed in the Cotswolds, Crafted in Jaipur
Every Mooch piece begins here in the Cotswolds, where we design with our British homes in mind. We draw inspiration from the rolling hills, hedgerows, and timeless beauty of the countryside around us, creating designs that feel both contemporary and classic.
Once the designs are finalised, they travel to Jaipur, where our master artisans carve the wooden blocks to our designs and bring them to life using the ancient art of block printing.
The Ancient Art of Block Printing
Block printing is a centuries-old craft that requires extraordinary skill, patience, and precision. Each piece of fabric that becomes part of the Mooch collection begins its journey in the hands of our Jaipur artisans, who use hand-carved wooden blocks created specifically for our designs to print the intricate patterns you see on our products.
The process is entirely manual. Our artisans carefully align each block, dip it in natural dyes, and press it onto the cotton fabric with just the right amount of pressure. A single cushion cover might require dozens of individual block impressions, each one placed with meticulous attention to ensure the pattern flows seamlessly across the fabric.
Meet the Makers
Our partnership with our Jaipur workshop is built on mutual respect, fair wages, and a shared commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship. The artisans we work with are true masters of their craft, many having learned the technique from their fathers and grandfathers.
What makes hand-printed textiles so special is that no two pieces are exactly alike. The subtle variations in colour saturation, the slight imperfections in alignment - these aren't flaws, they're the fingerprints of the human hands that created them. They're what make each Mooch piece authentically unique.
Sustainable by Design
Hand-printing isn't just beautiful - it's also inherently sustainable. Unlike industrial textile production, which consumes vast amounts of water and energy, our artisans use natural dyes and traditional techniques that have minimal environmental impact. The cotton we use is carefully sourced, and every step of the process is designed to honour both the craft and the planet.
By choosing hand-printed textiles, you're not just bringing beauty into your home. You're supporting skilled artisans, preserving traditional crafts, and making a choice that's kinder to the environment.
From Jaipur to the Cotswolds
Each piece travels from the vibrant workshops of Jaipur back to our home here in the Cotswolds, where we carefully curate collections that blend traditional Indian craftsmanship with contemporary British style. It's a meeting of two worlds, united by a love of slow living, quality materials, and timeless design.
When you choose a Mooch cushion or table linen, you're bringing a piece of this story into your home - the story of Cotswolds-inspired designs, skilled hands, ancient techniques, and a commitment to creating beautiful things that last.
